History
event 001. Gunnar was born in the Golmore Jungle and became a Warder, entrusted with the job of retrieving of-age kits and returning to the village every few years to procreate. He doesn't know any of his children and lived in isolation for a good chunk of his life, from the age of twelve summers onward.
event 002. Meeting his first love, an elezen explorer who stumbled upon his territory (he and Gunnar tried to kill each other), the elezen stayed with him for a time until he was killed during a conflict between his village warders and The Garlean Empire. He died in his arms.
event 003. Gunnar and his fellow warders were abducted by pirates and enslaved at sea for years. During that time, Gunnar hoarded resources and plotted a mutiny, upon execution he killed his captain by strangling him with the chains by which he was bound. He stepped into the role of captain, and in the following decades earned himself quite a reputation on the high seas.
event 004. Many duels with fellow pirates ensued during his career, most notably with Merlwyb rising in notoriety. Both maintaining power and skill, their duels would always end in stalemates. Eventually, once she became Admiral, the pair engaged in one more duel with the highest stakes conceivable; if Gunnar won, he would continue on with piracy uninterrupted. Should he lose, he would give up everything; his ship, his crew, and his reputation in exchange for a spot in The Maelstrom and a home in La Noscea. Gunnar now sports a bullet wound scar among many other marks, the physical manifestation of his greatest loss.
event 005. After making his home in La Noscea, Gunnar fell into an alcoholic fugue, pushing his remaining companions away from him. Once completely alone to dwell in self-loathing, he finally had an epiphany. He could hold his liquor too well and it was far too expensive to get a buzz. As such, he dropped the bottle and lifted the sword, becoming a gladiator in The Bloodsands. Learning the way of the Paladin, Gunnar refused to join the sultanate's guard and instead became a free Paladin, taking his oath to protect himself.
event 007. In his older years, Gunnar discovered his wounds were healing more slowly, his body less responsive in the heat of battle. This discovery came when he was dethroned as the leading combatant, put on his ass by none other than his would-be fiancé, and he has since retired, learning the ways of healing over harming. He loves massage work, chirotherapy, and the occasional mercenary job when the call comes.

The first person in a long time to put Gunnar on his ass in the ring. Gunnar proceeded to latch on to him, finding purpose in the mercenary work he did alongside the Au Ra. Eventually, after a lot of butting heads and suplexes, they fell in love.

Gunnar had two of his bottom teeth removed during his enslavement. They were replaced with gold teeth during his time as Captain.

Yes, that's fur. Gunnar is covered in silky-soft velveteen fuzz. He can thank genetics and his high testosterone level for that. (The fur has helped him get out of some sticky situations, making him slippery prey.)

Gunnar taught himself Common at sea. He still has trouble reading and pronouncing certain words. He maintains his Vieran accent and is still fluent in The Old Tongue.
strength
Gunnar made himself popular in The Bloodsands by fighting people twice his size. He loves to pick fights with those larger than him and has developed a skill for bringing them to their knees, or slinging them onto their backs. He maintains this propensity even in retirement.

While collared by his fiancé, he is unable to wear a collar proper due to immense discomfort with having any restraint around his neck. As such, he wears a locked Cuban chain bracelet, the key to which only Roxxane possesses. He also has grown to enjoy wearing a gold choke chain, further symbolizing their bond. He refuses to take it off.

Gunnar recently developed the need to wear corrective lenses; during his farewell bout in Ul'Dah, he got hit in the head so hard that it affected his vision. Of course the last time he fights for money he becomes impaired.
